Wellness consists of a healthy balance of time spent in the community and solitude. To determine my wellness, I’m currently forensically analyzing the percentage of time I spend with the community compared to myself.
I define balance by answering this question: How much am I growing in love with God, others, and myself by doing x?
- X can be spending time with the community.
- X can be spending time in solitude.
Whatever activity x is, it must always result in a growing love for God, others, and myself.
SOLITUDE WELLNESS BENEFITS
By being still (in the presence of God), I cultivate an awareness and appreciation of life. Solitude paradoxically increases my appreciation for the community. The time spent alone in solitude increases my sensitivity to the beauty (and the ugly) around and in me. It inclines me to correct the unhealthy patterns that prevent me from becoming who I was designed to be and genuinely connecting with others. Stillness allows me to be honest and correctly see my fears and patterns. Most importantly, it enables me to repent, cry to God, and hear His instruction. It also rejuvenates me to press on with a renewed vigor to reengage with the community.
COMMUNITY WELLNESS BENEFITS
When I think of community, I think of practicing the presence of people. As mentioned, the community can provide fellowship, support, and improvement opportunities. Iron truly does sharpen iron. There is no better way to learn about myself than engaging with and learning from others.
Consider your present percentage of community versus solitude. What do you need to adjust?
